Annual Program
Hosted by Micco Fay
Micco is the son of current SISCA president Jerry Fay. Micco was born in Del Rio, Texas, raised in San Antonio, and currently lives in Austin, Texas where he attended The University of Texas at Austin. Micco grew up attending Juneteenth and Seminole Days in the 1990s and 2000s, developing lifelong friendships with fellow children of Black Seminoles he can still call friends today.
Once in college at UT-Austin, Micco began deeply researching his Black Seminole roots as part of a research project, reading books, searching the web for sites like "Lest We Forget", and interviewing elders in his family, like his uncle and current SISCA board member John Fay. Dr. Harriet Romo, Micco's professor overseeing his research at UT-Austin, was fascinated by Micco's Black Seminole family story, and worked with her husband, then president of UTSA Dr. Ricardo Romo, to help preserve and promote Black Seminole history, ultimately championing and speaking at Alice Fay Lozano's book release for "My Black Seminole Ancestor's: Running to Freedom" at the Texas Institute of Cultures in San Antonio in 2004.
Today, Micco lives in Austin and works as a senior software consultant for the multinational corporation Blackbaud, where he works with Colleges and Universities worldwide to manage their scholarship awarding process. Micco is also a partner and board member at the marketing firm "The Down Market", owned by fellow Black Seminole John George Fay out of San Antonio, Texas. A member of the historically black community service fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha, you can find Micco in the Austin and San Antonio communities volunteering his time to help plan and execute various community events. Micco is also a long-time member of the public speaking organization Toastmasters, and if not giving speeches or emceeing himself, enjoys mentoring emerging leaders in communication and public speaking.
The name "Micco" is a Seminole word meaning chief or leader and Micco strives every day to live up to the namesake granted him.
